Electrochemical Behavior of Mg Ions in AlCl3-NaCl-KCl Molten Salt
The anodic dissolution behavior of Mg in an AlCl3-NaCl-KCl molten salt and the impact of Mg ion accumulation on Al electrorefining were investigated.Using a Mg anode, the electrolyte reached Mg saturation, causing anode potential fluctuations and the formation of Mg chloride precipitates.High Mg concentrations significantly increased the surface roughness of Al cathode deposits. The addition of AlCl3 successfully restored the surface morphology to its initial smooth state.Notably, despite Mg accumulation, no Mg contamination was detected in the cathode, confirming that high-purity aluminum can be recovered even in the presence of dissolved Mg.
