Heat retention and micromechanical performance of thermoregulating compressed brick systems

This study investigates the integration of phase change materials (PCMs) into thermoregulating compressed brick composites to enhance energy efficiency and indoor climate control. It emphasizes the critical role of PCM selection on thermal energy storage capabilities, demonstrating that microencapsulated PCMs offer substantial thermal storage potential compared to graphite-based alternatives. Empirical analysis reveals that the strategic placement of encapsulated PCMs within brick composites optimizes heat retention and reduces thermal resistance, thereby facilitating uniform thermal responses across varying environmental conditions. The study further highlights the incorporation of natural fibers, such as coconut fiber, which significantly improves the mechanical properties of the composites by enhancing compressive and flexural strengths. Microstructural investigations of coconut fibers clarify important interfacial bonding mechanisms that contribute positively to overall composite performance. Additionally, the result underscores the potential of utilizing sustainable materials, including Lithium slag, not only to mitigate environmental waste but also to improve the ecological profile of construction materials. The study concludes by addressing the economic feasibility and energy savings associated with manufacturing PCM-enhanced compressed bricks and recommends adopting a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) framework to fully evaluate the environmental impacts of these building materials. • Strategic PCM placement within bricks optimizes heat retention and ensures a uniform thermal response for year-round climate control • Natural coconut fiber reinforcement significantly improves the composite's mechanical strength • A cold-press manufacturing process eliminates high-temperature firing • Successful waste valorization is achieved by using industrial by-product lithium slag
