Mathematics in the books of the corpus of "Pilotage" texts from the Renaissance in Spain

The “Pilotage” texts of the Renaissance were generally characterized by following a common pattern, written as a recipe book and intended for professionals with limited knowledge in mathematics. The content analysis of these texts, based on the mathematical concepts they contain, has made it possible to determine the scope of said concepts and their pedagogical approach. This reinforces the existing theory that the “Pilotage” books were navigation manuals of a practical nature. However, the Regimiento de Navegación (1606) caused a breakthrough by expanding the development of the content and application of mathematics. This text systematically incorporated geometric, trigonometric and arithmetic propositions to express the laws of position astronomy and navigation, which resulted in the first navigation manual of a scientific-technical nature, establishing a notable difference with respect to its predecessors. Abstract

KEYWORDS: Nautical Education, Mathematics, Navigation Texts, Pilots of the Carrera de Indias.
