Spikeless Dielectric Waveguides for 600-GHz-Band Terahertz Communications

We propose a spikeless dielectric waveguide that achieves robust coupling between a silicon waveguide and a metallic hollow waveguide without relying on conventional tapered transitions. The waveguide has a large fractional bandwidth of 61% (330–620 GHz) with an average coupling efficiency of –1.7 dB. Using a communication system operating at the 600-GHz band with 16-QAM modulation, the spikeless waveguide supports a data rate of 40 Gbit/s within the hard-decision forward error correction threshold, showcasing robust interconnection for silicon waveguide-based devices in next-generation communication systems.
