ANALYSIS OF THE CORRELATION BETWEEN SKIN AND HEART REACTIONS IN OLFACTORY STIMULATIONS
This study investigates the correlation between skin and cardiac activity in response to different olfactory stimuli. It utilized nonlinear analytical techniques for signal evaluation. Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) signals were recorded from healthy participants during rest and while sniffing four different odorants with increasing molecular complexity, including Pineapple, Banana, Vanilla, and Lemon. Then, we computed fractal dimension, sample entropy, and Approximate Entropy (ApEn) for the R–R interval time series (obtained from ECG signals) and GSR signals. The results showed an increase in physiological signal complexity along with increasing molecular complexity of odors. Also, strong correlations were found between the complexity metrics of ECG and GSR signals, supporting coordinated autonomic and somatic responses. These findings indicate the importance of complexity-based approaches in decoding the correlation between different organs.
