On the Erdős-Turán Order-2 Barrier for Additive Bases with Cofinite Sumsets
We analyze the Erdős--Turán universality conjecture for order-2 additive bases with cofinite sumsets, which posits that the representation function $r_A(n)$ must be unbounded: $\limsup_{n\to\infty} r_A(n) = \infty$. Our investigation synthesizes analytic, combinatorial, algorithmic, and structural perspectives, highlighting the current frontier of knowledge. We clarify why the critical L$^2$-to-L$^\infty$ localization step remains unresolved, why thin bases and extremal constructions do not guarantee unboundedness, and why algorithmic and probabilistic approaches have so far failed to produce either a proof or a counterexample.
