Synthesis and characterization of amorphous/crystalline laminated composites via accumulative roll bonding and post-annealing treatment
The aim of this study is to create an amorphous/crystalline laminated metal composite via accumulative roll bonding (ARB) using 5, 10, and 20 wt% Cu 50 Zr 43 Al 7 metallic glass ribbons as a reinforcing phase in the aluminum matrix. The ideal percentage of metallic glass ribbons was determined as 10%. It was discovered that the bonding of the metallic glass ribbons to the matrix was weak, deteriorating the strength of the composites compared to the unreinforced counterpart. Accordingly, post-annealing treatments were performed at different times and temperatures. Increasing the annealing time at a constant temperature initially increased the thickness of the diffusion layer and improved bonding until reaching a relatively constant value. Increasing the annealing temperature also resulted in a significant increase in the thickness of the diffusion layer, for which the diffusion mechanism was also discussed. Annealing at 455 °C for 30 min was found to be the optimum heat treatment condition. The mechanical properties of the laminated composite significantly improved upon annealing, resulting in ductile amorphous/crystalline laminated metal composite with good tensile strength.
