Memristor Effects and Anisotropy in a Polyimide-TiV Composite with Filamentous Conducting Channels

To create new materials and components for microelectronics, it is necessary to solve the problems of controlling the electrical conductivity of polymer composites and finding promising areas for their application. Polymer-based composites acquire unique properties when incorporating dispersed particles into the polymer matrix. Titanium and its alloys are characterized by exceptional mechanical and tribological properties, corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and antibacterial properties, making them widely used in biomedicine. In this work, using electron microscopy, energy-dispersive and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, and electrical measurements, we studied the electrical properties of a composite material based on PI-LK2V polyimide and TiV powder. The ability to switch the samples to a conducting state by using a special electroforming mode was demonstrated. The samples exhibit nonlinearity in their I–V characteristics, as well as hysteresis and anisotropy of their electrical properties. Varistor and memristor effects were detected, which are explained by the formation of thin, filamentous conducting channels in the composite material. The results of the study can be used in integrated electronics to create composite functional materials with controlled conductive and dielectric properties, as well as in multi-level wiring and redistribution layer technologies.
