Numerical Study on Geometric Effects in a Dual-mode Ramjet Downstream Combustor
This study numerically analyzed the combustion characteristics of a downstream combustor in a dual-mode ramjet engine with a staged combustor configuration. The analysis was conducted using a RANS based density solver with the SST k- turbulence model and the finite rate/eddy dissipation combustion model. In the baseline combustor, poor mixing performance was observed. In the TVC (Trapped Vortex Combustor) configuration, improvements in flow and mixing characteristics were identified depending on the positions of the baffle and injector, along with notable changes in combustion characteristics according to the equivalence ratio. Finally, a symmetric expansion type combustor was proposed, which demonstrated the best combustion efficiency and outlet temperature among all evaluated configurations. .
