DETERMINATION OF PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME FREQUENCY AND RELATED FACTORS IN ADOLESCENTS: THE CASE OF KAHRAMANMARAŞ PROVINCE

OBJECTIVE: Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a health problem that does not have a definitive treatment method since its etiology is unclear, but negatively it affects the living standards of women on a global level. The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of premenstrual syndrome and related factors in adolescents. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study, designed in a descriptive and cross-sectional design, was conducted between January- May 2023 with 311 adolescents between the ages of 12-18. Data were collected using the Descriptive Information Form and the Premenstrual Syndrome Scale (PMSS). RESULTS: PMS was detected in 73.3% of adolescents. It was determined that there was a significant positive relationship between the PMSS average score and sub-dimensions of depressive effect of the adolescents participating in the study and age (r:0.121, p:0.033). In addition, it was determined that there was a positive, statistically significant relationship between the menarche period of the adolescents participating in the study and the PMSS total score and subscales of depressive affect, anxiety fatigue, depressive thoughts, pain and appetite change (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Since PMS is frequently observed in adolescence, it can be said that it is extremely important to integrate early intervention programs into risk groups before menarche.
