Preacher Moss Sets the Tone: A New Genealogy and Anatomy of American Muslim Comedy

Abstract: This article addresses how the trailblazing work of Preacher Moss has set the tone for American Muslim stand-up comedy in the twenty-first century. His emerging career in the 1990s calls for an approach that decenters 9/11 in the history of the genre. His vision also invites us to consider his initial motivations for American Muslim stand-up comedy as religious work tied to the history of Black Muslim communities and intra-communal responses to Islamophobia. Moss’s case introduces a discourse through which we can further examine the operations of race, religion, and power in American Muslim comedy as well as the relationship between Black and “immigrant” Muslims in the United States into the twenty-first century. In attending to Moss’s early career and vision of Muslim comedy, this article suggests a new historical and conceptual reading of the genre by highlighting intra-ummaic dynamics and Black Muslim traditions, thereby demonstrating how American Muslim comedy belongs to traditions of both religious and charged humor.
