Treading on the Devil's Tail

Supplemental dataset for the documentary film series Treading on the Devil’s Tail. This dataset documents the verified theatrical engagements of F.W. Murnau’s lost 1928 Fox Film feature Four Devils. Coverage includes:– Over 2,120 U.S. and territorial screenings– Over 260 Australian screenings– Over 50 New Zealand screenings All entries were compiled exclusively from contemporary newspaper advertisements and listings (1928–1933). To date, this represents the most complete exhibition record assembled for these regions. The data are the result of more than a decade of independent research (2014–2025).Appended to a preproduction bible (v. 1.0), still-in-progress.
