Analysis Of Urban Deprivation of Basic Services and Amenities in Abeokuta Area, Nigeria

This study investigates urban service deprivation in Abeokuta Metropolis, Ogun State, with the aim of assessing the adequacy, accessibility, and equity of key urban services across Abeokuta North and South Local Government Areas. Using primary household surveys (350 residents) and institutional data (50 administrative respondents), the study combines descriptive statistics, cross-tabulation with Chi Square tests, and the Urban Service Deprivation Index (USDI) to evaluate six critical service dimensions, water supply, electricity, waste management, drainage, healthcare, and road network adequacy. Findings reveal that service deprivation in the metropolis is moderate but systemic. Access levels are generally high, yet functional adequacy remains low, particularly for waste collection and road infrastructure. Income, education, and occupation significantly influence service adequacy, while clear spatial disparities exist between the two LGAs; Abeokuta North records higher deprivation (mean USDI ≈ 3.7) compared to Abeokuta South (mean ≈ 3.2). The study concludes that urban service deprivation in Abeokuta is both social and institutional, driven by economic inequality and uneven administrative investment. The USDI framework developed herein provides a replicable, data-driven approach for diagnosing multi-sectoral service deprivation and prioritizing interventions. Findings support equitable budgeting, decentralized service governance, and evidence-based urban policy consistent with SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
