Narratives of Students and Alumni from a Degree Program in Portuguese as an Additional Language: Signs of the Potential for Building an Other Internationalization / Narrativas de alunos e egressos de uma licenciatura em Português como Língua Adiciona

ABSTRACT: The objective of this article is to present a research project and analyze how students, who are studying to become teachers of Portuguese as a Second Language/Additional Language (PSL/PAL) in a degree program at a public university in Brazil, narrate aspects of internationalization at the university, as well as the contribution of their degree program to this process. To achieve our objective, we analysed testimonials about internationalization written by students from the first year of the Teacher Education Degree Program in PSL/PAL, and transcripts of audio-recordings of semi-structured interviews carried out in 2023 with alumni. In both the narratives of students beginning their education and training, and in the alumni narratives, few aspects of internationalization were reported as being visible on campus. Mention was only made of student mobility and the presence of international students. However, the alumni narratives included visions of an expanded linguistic education – for pluralism and social justice – which had been shaped during their educational experience in the program.
