Renewable Energy Adoption and Real Estate Dynamics:A Homeowner-centric Study

The built environment is the cornerstone of global sustainability efforts, accounting for a substantial share of energy consumption and carbon emissions. This chapter investigates the adoption of renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency measures in residential buildings, with a specific focus on their perceived influence on real estate market dynamics. Anchored in a structured survey of homeowners in Paphos, Cyprus, the study utilizes advanced statistical tools, including Cronbach's alpha for reliability analysis, the Friedman test for ranking variables, and factor analysis for dimensionality reduction, to uncover nuanced insights into attitudes, motivations, and barriers influencing the adoption of sustainable practices. The analysis reveals a strong association between renewable energy integration and enhanced property valuation, highlighting key drivers such as financial incentives, energy independence, and environmental stewardship. Despite these opportunities, challenges such as cost apprehension and limited public awareness persist, underscoring the need for targeted policy interventions. Overall, the findings emphasize the importance of demographic and socioeconomic variables in shaping homeowner perceptions, providing a granular understanding of market behaviour. By offering a strong empirical foundation, this chapter contributes to the discourse on sustainable urban development and green real estate. It delivers actionable insights for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and sustainability advocates, underscoring the urgency of bridging the gap between environmental ambition and market adoption. The discussion also highlights the critical role of public education, incentive structures, and regulatory frameworks in accelerating the integration of renewable energy into the built environment.
