Empowering Offline UPI Transactions: Extending Digital Payments Beyond Internet Connectivity even in Aeroplane
Abstract: Approximately 40 crore people in India were using feature phones as of March 2022. In India, UPI is used for approximately 11 billion transactions; however, many people do not own smartphones and may not be familiar with digital payment methods. You might find it difficult to transfer money while traveling on an airplane without internet access, even if you own a smartphone. This paper examines the transformative potential of offline UPI transactions, which enable digital payments to be made without requiring internet connectivity. This study explores the technological, regulatory, and user experience aspects of taking UPI functionality offline, with a focus on various scenarios such as air travel. Gathered fundamental knowledge and pinpointed research gaps by conducting a thorough analysis of research papers, business reports, and regulatory documents about UPI, digital payments, and offline transactions. To improve financial inclusion, user convenience, and the overall state of digital payments, this research will look at the opportunities and problems that come with allowing offline UPI transactions. By conducting this investigation, the paper hopes to add to the conversation about extending the reach of UPI transactions, especially in situations where internet access is limited, like when traveling by air and in remote areas.
