Understanding Prayer Healing Phenomena Using the Quantum Oncotheology Theoretical Framework
The integration of spirituality and medicine remains contested terrain, particularly regarding documented cases of prayer-associated healing. This doctoral dissertation addresses the explanatory gap in understanding remarkable recovery events following religious prayer through the application of Quantum Oncotheology, a novel theoretical framework synthesizing quantum biological phenomena, theological healing traditions, and clinical medicine. The purpose of this study was to analyze 83 documented prayer healing cases from Dutch research (2015-2020) using Quantum Oncotheology's Five-Domain Model and Eight Universal Themes. Employing a transdisciplinary methodology combining medical record analysis, modified Lambertini criteria assessment, and phenomenological interpretation, this research examined healing reports across 16 medical categories evaluated by a five-specialist medical panel. Findings revealed 11 medically remarkable healings encompassing conditions including Crohn's disease, acute leukemia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, anorexia nervosa, and ulcerative colitis. Four distinctive patterns emerged: instantaneous onset (82% of cases), low or absent expectancy challenging placebo explanations, functional-objective diagnostic mismatches, and sustained healing at 2-4 year follow-up. The Quantum Oncotheology framework demonstrated superior explanatory power through its integration of quantum coherence-spiritual wholeness correspondences, entanglement-intercessory prayer parallels, and psychoneuroimmunological bridging mechanisms. This research contributes to medical science by documenting anomalous healing phenomena requiring explanation, to theology by providing empirically-grounded analysis of healing traditions, to philosophy by advancing epistemological frameworks accommodating both objective and subjective evidence, and to interdisciplinary scholarship by modeling rigorous integration across disciplinary boundaries. Implications suggest the necessity of horizontal epistemological approaches and person-centered medical frameworks for understanding healing phenomena that transcend conventional biomedical models.
