Integration of ESG principles in business law: Why should Indonesian companies care?
This research examined the critical role of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles in contemporary business law and their significance for companies. The main objectives of the examination were to identify the role of the legal and regulatory framework in ESG principles adoption by Indonesian companies, assess the impact on financial performance and stakeholder relations, examine successful corporate governance mechanisms for ESG in multinational corporations, and provide actionable recommendations for businesses and policymakers. This study adopts a qualitative case study methodology, relying on secondary data from publicly available sources, including sustainability reports, corporate publications, and academic studies of companies. The results showed that the adoption of ESG principles not only enhanced corporate reputation and compliance with international standards but also mitigated risks and improved long-term financial performance. The implications of these results suggested that companies investing in ESG principles were better positioned to meet evolving stakeholder expectations, navigate regulatory landscapes, and achieve sustainable growth. Furthermore, this research underscored businesses' need to embrace ESG principles as a strategy, contributing to corporate success and broader societal well-being. This research contributes significantly to the existing literature by addressing the gap in ESG studies on emerging economies and providing a much-needed analysis of ESG integration within Indonesia's unique legal and economic framework.
