Factors Affecting Physician Exit and Reentry into Medicine
Physicians exit clinical medicine for a variety of reasons. Our study showed a significant gender difference in motivation for taking time off. Female physicians were more likely to cite reasons relating to the care of children and family responsibilities, whereas male physicians were more likely to cite career-related factors. Most physicians surveyed were able to reenter medicine after time off, but more than 50% found the process challenging.
