The Appeal of Alfred Adler’s Theory and Philosophy: Understanding Classical Adlerian Practitioners’ Theoretical Orientation Development
Abstract: The importance and value of theories in helping practitioners work with clients cannot be overstated. This study used an interpretative phenomenological analysis approach to understand the lived theoretical orientation development experiences of five self-identified classical Adlerian practitioners. Findings indicated two patterns for learning theory in counseling and psychotherapy that emerged across the participants: (a) the appeal of Adler’s theory and philosophy and (b) Adler’s original writings. Findings provide insights into the process of developing a theoretical orientation to counseling and psychotherapy among Adlerian practitioners. Recommendations for future research are offered.
