Aesthetic Characteristics and Critical Issues of Image-Generative AI Landscape Drawings†

This study examines the aesthetic discourses surrounding image-generative artificial intelligence (AI) and critically discusses the aesthetic characteristics and inherent issues observed in the processes and outcomes, Recent aesthetic discourses was reviewed to conceptualize the medium-specific characteristics of AI through the perspectives of new media effects, predictive media, and creative agency. Building on this theoretical framework, the study analyzed the production mechanisms of AI drawings in landscape design. Specifically, by comparing the interface and use of AI platforms in the design process with those of conventional digital drawing methods, the study interpreted the aesthetic principles and effects distinctive to AI-generated landscape drawings. Subsequently, the study critically explored the aesthetic issues emerging in AI landscape drawing and design practices. AI drawings can produce new media effects that enable experimentation with alternative landscape aesthetics, extending beyond the ideals of pastoral landscapes. However, as the designer’s intent is conveyed through text and its interpretation and visual realization are performed autonomously by AI, questions arise about authorship and creative ownership. Moreover, the resulting images often lack contextual elements such as environmental, urban, or cultural factors, rendering limited practically and applicability limited in professional design contexts. In addition, the iterative learning of pre-existing landscape imagery raises concerns over the homogenized reproduction of conventional landscape aesthetics. Finally, in the age of AI, landscape designers are expected to assume the role of directors who lead and critically direct the drawing process—particularly in prompt design and the judgment of the visual and contextual validity of AI-generated images.
