Dynamic deformation analysis of aluminum alloy 5083 using electronic speckle pattern interferometry

In this study, we propose a phase-analysis algorithm that operates on a single contour image obtained via electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) to investigate non-uniform deformation in Al–Mg alloys. The method combines differential analysis of intensity distributions with edge detection based on the ESPI speckle pattern, followed by full-field interpolation of displacement under assumed macroscopic boundary conditions. This approach enables dynamic analysis across all frames, capturing deformation from the elastic stage through plasticity to fracture. The method was applied to uniaxial tensile tests of Al–Mg alloys to analyze the formation and propagation of shear bands associated with serrated stress–strain behavior. The validity of the algorithm was assessed via correlation with the obtained speckle patterns, and the shear-band propagation was visualized and interpreted in terms of wave dynamics.
