Ontological model of functional capabilities of personal Internet of Things devices

The subject of the research is the problem of formalized representation of the functional capabilities of personal Internet of Things (PIoT) devices operating within personal IoT networks. The object of the research is PIoT devices and their functional capabilities, described in the context of the user's personal IoT ecosystem. The work thoroughly examines the structure of the functionality of PIoT devices, their states, dependencies on user, network, and contextual environments, as well as the necessity of semantically consistent description of functions for management and interoperability purposes. Particular attention is given to the shortcomings of existing approaches, where the functional capabilities of devices are described either at the service level or as non-formalized lists of functions, which limits the possibilities for systematic analysis and the development of universal management mechanisms. In this context, the research aims to create a comprehensive model of the functionality of PIoT devices. The methodological foundation of the research is an ontological approach. The ontology of the functional capabilities of PIoT devices has been developed based on "METHONTOLOGY," supplemented by a formal model of functional states and constraints. The main findings of the conducted research are the justification of the need for a formalized description of the functional capabilities of PIoT devices and the demonstration that the proposed ontological and formal models provide a semantically consistent and strictly structured representation of functionality. A significant contribution of the author to the study of the topic is the formalization of the concept of functional capabilities as a dynamic object of management with stochastically changing states and the development of an ontology that includes classes of devices, functions, policies, constraints, and states. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the first-time proposal of a formalized ontological model of the functionality of PIoT devices, complemented by a formal model of functional states, allowing for the description of the structure of device capabilities and their dynamics depending on the context of operation. The results obtained provide a foundation for the development of adaptive, intelligent, and secure management mechanisms for personal Internet of Things devices.
