The Cuban Revolution as More than What Cuba is Today, and In This Issue

While the Cuban economy was relatively lethargic in the decade after the world's Great Recession from 2008 to 2010 (like the economies of many but not all countries around the world), the current economic crisis in Cuba can really only be said to have begun in 2019, exactly as the effects of President Trump's greatly enhanced economic aggression against the Island from late 2017 onward took effect. The economic hardship these measures are causing in Cuba, and the marked difference of Cuba's situation today from its lethargic economic performance before 2019, is striking to anyone visiting the Island. On the one hand, interesting and important things, of course, continue to unfold on the Island today, notwithstanding the overall severely problematic situation, as a number of the articles in this issue address.Cuba's amazing accomplishment of creating, and continuing to develop, world-class pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries in a small Global South country under a harsh economic blockade is, of course, globally the best known and most discussed such thing in Cuba. But while experts around the world are well aware of Cuba's ongoing contributions to today's global ecologically imperative agroecological
