Unexpected Self-Reactivity of a Pyridinium–Benzimidazolate Zwitterion Leading to a Novel Atropoisomeric Scaffold with Single-Component White Light Emission
We report the discovery of a hitherto unknown reactivity consisting of self-coupling of a benzimidazolato-pyridinium zwitterion (1) leading to compound rac-3 with an intriguing atropoisomeric structural scaffold. This novel compound rac-3 was structurally characterized and investigated by DFT and TD-DFT calculations. Compound rac-3 shows rare single-component white light dual emission properties, which may pave the way for new opportunities in organic chemistry for luminescent materials, biology, or catalysis.
