When SPF testing fails: lessons from sunscreen recalls in Australia
Recent sunscreen recalls in Australia have highlighted important limitations in the reliability and regulatory oversight of determining the sun protection factor (SPF) of sunscreens. Based on these events, we argue that inaccurate SPF labelling should be viewed as a patient-safety issue rather than a cosmetic concern, with implications for clinical counselling and public trust. Strengthening testing standards and postmarket surveillance is essential to maintain confidence in photoprotection and preventive dermatology.
