Synthesis and Characterization of Cellulose‐Based Composite Resins for UV‐Curable Applications

ABSTRACT In this study, composite resins were produced by combining acrylate, cellulose (Cel), and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) for UV‐cured applications. Trimethylpropane triacrylate (TMPTA), urethane methacrylate resin (UM), and a photoinitiator (diphenyl(2,4,6‐trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide, TPO) were mixed, and Cel or CMC were added separately to produce composite resins. Characterization data (viscosity, mechanical properties, gel content, water retention, chemical and solvent resistance, and contact angle) were obtained for all resin formulations. The optimal formulation was found to be a TMPTA:UM ratio of 1:1, a TPO content of 1%, a curing time of 30 s, and a resin viscosity of 350–385 cP. Hydrophobic/hydrophilic properties were evaluated, and it was found that Cel or CMC increased the compressive strength. The gel content of the cured resins ranged from 96.11% to 97.72%. Chemical resistance tests showed high stability against HCl, NaOH, and HF, and low resistance against chloroform and toluene. The results indicate that the controlled addition of Cel and CMC can improve certain mechanical properties and functionality of UV‐cured composite resins.
