Reimagining Peacebuilding: The Intersection of LGBTQI+ Identities and Transformative Justice

ABSTRACT∞ This article critically examines the limitations of transitional justice frameworks in addressing the justice needs of LGBTQI+ individuals. It argues that these frameworks often marginalize non-normative identities. By applying a transformative justice lens, it explores LGBTQI+ rights in Northern Ireland, with a focus on the persistence of marginalization and inequality. Using this framework, it engages with the current hostilities surrounding a proposed ban on conversion practices. It demonstrates how these public struggles reveal the enduring influence of ethno-religious ideologies that harmed LGBTQI+ individuals during the conflict and continue to shape hostilities towards them in the peacebuilding era. The article also discusses the personal experiences of the researcher as an advocate within these struggles, highlighting the challenges faced by those who expose ongoing injustices against historically despised identities in peacebuilding contexts. Ultimately, the article calls for a transformative approach to peacebuilding that redefines peacebuilding to encompass freedom from injustice for all communities.
