Delegated Token Semaphore (DTS): A Fair and Scalable Synchronization Mechanism for Multicore Systems
This article introduces the Delegated Token Semaphore (DTS), a scalable and fair synchronization mechanism designed for multiprocessor and multicore operating systems. DTS integrates token-based access control with delegation-based batch execution to eliminate busy waiting, prevent starvation, and reduce synchronization overhead under high contention. The paper presents system design, algorithmic formulation, and experimental evaluation comparing DTS against conventional primitives such as spinlocks, mutexes, semaphores, and futex-based locks. Results demonstrate improvements in throughput, waiting time, CPU utilization, fairness, and scalability.
