Efficacy of Concentrated Growth Factors in Bone Regeneration After Surgical Removal of Cystic and Benign Lesions of The Jaws Using CBCT
Background: Cystic and benign lesions frequently manifest in the oral and maxillofacial areas. Platelet concentrates extensively utilized in the oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures to aid in repairing and regeneration of the tissues. The objective of this study was to assess, both clinically and radiologically, the effectiveness of platelet concentrates in bone repair following the surgical excision of cystic and benign lesions of the jaw. Materials and Methods: Randomized controlled study was performed on 24 individuals exhibiting cystic and benign lesions in the maxilla and were randomly divided into two equal groups. Group I, after surgical removal of the lesion, fibrin buffy coat and the liquid phase of concentrated growth factor (CGF) were administered to the defect site. Group II, lesions were removed without using any platelet concentrates. A clinical evaluation was performed to assess wound healing, and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging was utilized to quantify the amount and density of the remaining bone defect at baseline and six months postoperatively. Results: All patients in both groups had satisfactory soft tissue recovery. A notable improvement was observed in bone density and the volume of bone defect filling in group I at 6 months, relative to group II. Conclusion: Platelet concentrates are a significant alternative strategy. CGF-derived fibrin is a promising biomaterial for bone regeneration, enhancing new bone formation after the surgical excision of cystic and benign jaw lesions. Keywords: Platelet concentrates, osseous regeneration, cystic lesions, benign jaw lesions
