An Analytical Study of the Production and Economic Efficiency of Green and Dry Beans in Egypt

Beans are regarded as a non-traditional crop with high productive and export potential, generating substantial returns at both the national and global levels. The present study addresses the problem of a significant decline in both the cultivated area and yield per feddan of beans in Egypt, which has adversely affected national production levels. Simultaneously, rising production costs have led to a reduction in net returns per feddan, thereby diminishing the overall economic viability of bean cultivation. The research employed both descriptive and quantitative economic analysis methods. Primary data were collected through structured personal interviews with a field sample comprising 60 green bean farmers in the Nubaria region (South El-Tahrir Center) and 60 dry bean farmers in Menoufia Governorate (El-Shohada Center) during 2023. The findings revealed that, during the 2020–2022 period, green bean cultivation in Egypt was highly concentrated in four governorates: Nubaria, Giza, Sharqia, and Ismailia, accounting for approximately 76.22% of the national cultivated area. In contrast, dry bean cultivation was primarily concentrated in Beheira, Menoufia, and Nubaria, representing about 90.
