OUTSIDE THE CIRCLE: REVITALIZING COLLEGE WRESTLING THROUGH THE FAN EXPERIENCE
This study examined the relationship between match day fan experience and attendance at Division I college wrestling events to identify strategies for enhancing engagement and program sustainability. An online survey of 1,183 fans from four universities (Iowa, Penn State, NC State, and Campbell) assessed demographics, satisfaction, and attendance behaviors. Multiple regression analysis identified predictors of attendance. Fans reported high satisfaction (M = 4.3/5) and likelihood to recommend (M = 9.2/10); however, these were not statistically significant predictors of attendance. Income and season ticket ownership were the strongest correlates of attendance. Fans prioritized seat location, viewing angle, and facility cleanliness over entertainment elements. Results suggest that improving core venue experiences, implementing value-based marketing for middle-income fans, and strengthening digital and community engagement strategies may increase attendance and ensure the long-term viability of collegiate wrestling programs.
