Clinical Rotation and Role vagueness and Its Relation to Work Alienation among Nurse Interns

Background: Clinical rotation experience is crucial in nursing education as it helps student nurses to transform theoretical knowledge into clinical practice. Nurse interns experience role vagueness and work alienation as result of conflict between expectations of nursing role and reality of actual role in clinical setting. Aim: The current study aim was to assess clinical rotation, role vagueness and its relation to work alienation among nurse interns. Methods: A descriptive correlational research design was utilized. Setting: The current study conducted at EL Fayoum university hospitals and EL Fayoum general hospital. Subjects Included 230 nurse interns. Tools: three tools were used for collecting data: First tool Internship Clinical Rotation Questionnaire. Second tool was Role Vagueness Questionnaire. Third was Alienation Assessment Questionnaire. Results: More than two thirds (68.7%) of the studied nurse interns not achieve clinical rotation, whereas, near to three-quarters (71.7%) of them had vagueness regarding to their role. While, more than half (56.5%) of them had high level of work alienation. Conclusion: There was a highly statistically significant negative relation between studied nurse interns' clinical rotation, role vagueness and work alienation. Moreover, there was a highly statistically significant positive relation between studied nurse interns' role vagueness and work alienation. Recommendations: Encourage cooperation protocols between nursing faculties and general and specialized hospitals.
