To Evaluate the Role of Anti-müllerian Hormone as a Novel Biomarker in Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and its Correlation with Clinical and Hormonal Profile
Objectives: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder in women of reproductive age-group associated with various signs and symptoms. The objective of this study was to assess this hormonal alteration [hormones like luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), testosterone], especially anti-mllerian hormone (AMH) levels in PCOS cases as compared to the normal group, and also to find the correlation of AMH with the clinical and hormonal parameters of PCOS. Materials and methods:The study was done in a tertiary care hospital of Punjab on 45 PCOS cases and 45 controls. The hormonal assays like, FSH, LH, and testosterone, were estimated by a fully automated chemiluminescence analyzer, Immulite 1000, and AMH levels by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).Statistical analysis: Results were analyzed using an independent samples t-test or Mann-Whitney U-test.Results: A significant difference was found for AMH, LH, testosterone, and LH/FSH ratio in cases as compared to controls, and AMH levels were significantly elevated in PCOS patients with menstrual irregularity. Conclusion: Polycystic ovary syndrome is such an entity where the interplay of hormonal alterations like AMH, LH, FSH, and LH/FSH ratio has a central role in the pathophysiology of the disease. The interrelationship of AMH with various hormones shows that AMH can be considered an independent biomarker for PCOS.With a high sensitivity (96.2%) and specificity (95.6%),AMH, with a cut-off at 4.63 ng/mL, plays an active role in PCOS women and is significantly altered in patients with menstrual irregularity.
