Cybersecurity in Africa: Opportunities and Challenges in Emerging Markets

Africa is experiencing a digital transformation unlike anything the continent has seen before. Frommobile money and e-commerce platforms to cloud services and remote work tools, technology hasbecome deeply embedded in everyday life, even in regions that were historically underserved. In Kenya, for example, M-Pesa revolutionized financial inclusion, demonstrating how digital platforms can leapfrogtraditional infrastructure challenges. Across the continent, similar innovations are taking root — digitalhealth services, government e-services, and mobile-based education platforms are rapidly expandingaccess and reshaping economies. However, with rapid adoption comes a stark reality: cybersecurity threats are growing in parallel withopportunity. The same mobile networks, cloud platforms, and web applications that drive economicgrowth also expand the attack surface for cybercriminals, fraudsters, and nation-state actors. Phishingcampaigns, ransomware attacks, and data breaches have begun to target both high-profile institutions andsmaller businesses that may lack sophisticated defenses. In other words, Africa’s digital boom is adouble-edged sword: it brings incredible opportunity but also significant risk.
