Stroke management practices among caregivers in Hohoe Municipality, Volta Region, Ghana: a qualitative study

Stroke is the most common cause of serious functional disability and long-term neurologic impairment, requiring caregivers' assistance in carrying out daily living activities. In rural communities, where the impact of this condition is greatest, there is limited information on caregivers' experiences and understanding of managing the condition. This study explored the management practices among stroke caregivers within the Hohoe Municipality.A phenomenological study design was used to conduct this study in rural communities within Hohoe Municipality.In-depth interviews were conducted with a semi-structured interview guide. This study recruited 19 caregivers using the snowballing strategy.Interviews were transcribed using Microsoft Word and ATLAS.ti.software was used to perform thematic analysis.Medical pluralism was common among participants.A blend of orthodox medicines, herbal concoctions, and prayers were often administered simultaneously to manage the condition. The caregiving burden was influenced by roles performed, presence of comorbidities, level of disability, income, and support from family and the physiotherapy department.Caregivers were challenged physically, psychologically, socially, and financially, which affected their quality of life with subsequent implications for patients' recovery. It was exceptionally challenging for caregivers with persons living with comorbid conditions.Caregiving affects the health and well-being of caregivers; therefore, health professionals should not neglect the health needs of caregivers while providing care to persons suffering from stroke. The findings highlight the importance of structured caregiver support and community-based rehabilitation programs in rural Ghana.
