Multi-scale differentials and wonderful models
We study the relationships between several varieties parametrizing marked curves with differentials in the literature. More precisely, we prove that the space <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> B n \mathcal {B}_n </inline-formula> of multi-scale differentials of genus <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> 0 0 </inline-formula> with <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> n + 1 n+1 </inline-formula> marked points of orders <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> ( 0 , … , 0 , − 2 ) (0,\ldots , 0, -2) </inline-formula> , as introduced by Matt Bainbridge, Dawei Chen, Quentin Gendron, Samuel Grushevsky, and Martin Möller [ The moduli space of multi-scale differentials , 2022], is a wonderful variety in the sense of work by Tom Braden, June Huh, Jacob P. Matherne, Nicholas Proudfoot, and Botong Wang [Adv. Math. 409 (2022), Paper No. 108646, 49]. This shows that the Chow ring of <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> B n \mathcal {B}_n </inline-formula> is generated by the classes of a collection of smooth boundary divisors with normal crossings subject to simple and explicit linear and quadratic relations. Furthermore, we realize <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> B n \mathcal {B}_n </inline-formula> as a subvariety of the space <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> A n \mathcal {A}_n </inline-formula> of multi-scale lines defined by Daniel Halpern-Leistner and Antonios-Alexandros Robotis [Preprint, arXiv: <ext-link xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2501.00710">2501.00710</ext-link> , 2025] and prove that <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> B n \mathcal {B}_n </inline-formula> can be realized as the normalized Chow quotient of <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> A n \mathcal {A}_n </inline-formula> by a natural <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> C ∗ \mathbb {C}^* </inline-formula> -action.
