Representations of Austerity Urbanism in Contemporary Portuguese Film: The Case of São Jorge

Abstract: Precarity has emerged as a key conceptual shift in discussions surrounding social exclusion, particularly in contexts marked by economic crisis. In this sense, it serves as a timely and pertinent concept for understanding the lived conditions produced by neoliberal restructuring. In Portugal, the financial crisis of 2008–14 significantly reshaped the urban landscape, giving rise to what may be described as Portuguese geographies of precarity. This article examines precarity as a socio-political consequence of the austerity measures implemented during the Portuguese financial crisis, through an analysis of the film São Jorge [ Saint George ] (2016), directed by Marco Martins. The study explores how austerity policies are represented and made tangible through cinematic space, highlighting how austerity urbanism structures the spatialization of precarious lives. The analysis offers a critical lens into the proliferation of precarious urban spaces, where marginalized communities are disproportionately affected by intersecting forms of exclusion, including racism and sexism. Furthermore, the analysis considers the impact of the crisis on both the workplace and the domestic sphere, revealing the multifaceted nature of precarity as it unfolds across everyday urban life.
