Swipe, Share, Engage: A Gamification Analysis of Instagram Reels

This paper analyzes the gamification of social media through a case study of Instagram Reels. Drawing on theories of gamification, affordances, and Verbeek’s script concept, the study examines how specific design features shape user behavior and engagement. Through qualitative analysis of interface elements such as swipe navigation, likes, challenges, and algorithmic recommendations, the paper demonstrates how Instagram Reels encourages continuous interaction, competition, and content optimization. While these mechanisms afford creativity, community building, and skill development, they also risk fostering addictive usage patterns, comparison culture, and homogenized content. The study highlights the ethical implications of platform design and calls for more mindful user engagement and responsible design practices.
