Evaluation of Dentists’ Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice in Emergency Management of Traumatic Injuries in Permanent Anterior Teeth in Two Governorates of Upper Egypt (Cross-sectional study)

Introduction: Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) are common oral emergencies affecting children and adults, with anterior teeth being the most frequently involved. Proper emergency management is crucial to avoid complications such as pulp necrosis, root resorption, or tooth loss. Despite the existence of international guidelines, several studies have reported insufficient knowledge and preparedness among dentists in managing such cases. Assessing dentists‘ knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) is essential to identify gaps and guide educational strategies. Aim: To assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of dentists towards emergency treatment of TDIs in two Upper Egyptian governorates. Subjects and Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted among registered dentists in Minia and Assiut governorates, from December 2022 to March 2023. A simple random sample of 250 dentists completed a structured, validated questionnaire assessing knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding emergency management of traumatic dental injuries. Responses were scored and categorized using a 60% cut-off point. Data were analyzed with SPSS 28.0 using descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: A little over half of the dentists (51.2%) had good knowledge regarding the management of traumatic dental injury, and 92% had a favorable attitude. However, only 27.2% had prior experience in treating these emergencies, revealing a gap between knowledge and practice. There was no correlation found between demographic factors and performance. Conclusion: Most dentists lacked practical dental trauma management abilities, notwithstanding their positive attitudes. To improve emergency treatment results, more recent clinical education and training programs are needed.
