A Case Report of Pulmonary Mucormycosis in an Immunocompetent Individual
Abstract Rhizopus spp. are saprophytic fungi that frequently infect immunocompromised individuals. Rhizopus pneumonia is an uncommon but serious illness that typically affects people with weakened immune systems, such as those with diabetes and cancer or organ transplant recipients. However, infections in immunocompetent people are uncommon and may provide a diagnostic difficulty due to their rarity and ambiguous clinical presentation. This case report details a rare case of Rhizopus pneumonia in an immunocompetent patient and discusses the diagnostic technique, treatment and outcome.
