The Role of Diagnostic Laparoscopy versus Imaging Techniques in the Evaluation of Chronic/Recurrent Right Iliac Fossa Pain
Introduction: Chronic right iliac fossa (RIF) pain is a grey area. There are no guidelines given for the best wayof therapy. Abdominal ultrasonography (USG) is operator-dependent and has variable success rates. Some typesof people can’t get computerised tomography (CT) scans because of their toxic effect on the kidneys and exposureof people to radiation. There is a growing trend among doctors to use laparoscopy to diagnose and treat chronicRIF pain.Aim of work: The aim of this research was to investigate the value of diagnostic laparoscopy in relation to USGand CT abdominal imaging for chronic RIF pain.Patients and methods: This study included sixty people with chronic RIF pain. Abdominal USG and CT scanwere done on each subject, and the results were matched to those from a diagnostic laparoscopy. When a clearpathology was found, attempts were made to get a biopsy or use this method as a treatment. Results: When it came to identifying chronic RIF pain, ultrasound’s overall accuracy was 56.6%, sensitivitywas 43%, and specificity was 78%. A CT scan’s overall diagnostic accuracy for chronic RIF pain was 65%, witha sensitivity of 81% and a specificity of 39%. Diagnostic laparoscopy had an overall 88% accuracy rate, 89%sensitivity, and 86.9% specificity in detecting chronic RIF pain. Conclusion: When determining the aetiology of chronic RIF pain, CT is superior to USG. When other radiologicaland pathological tests are inclusive, diagnostic laparoscopy is helpful.
