Durability and fatigue studies ofbacteria induced concrete for rigid pavements with 3S Recron fibers – A review

Rigid pavements are subjected to substantial mechanical and environmental loads with durability and fatigue resistance being two vital parameters in rigid pavements design and performance. Conventional concrete deteriorates through micro-cracking and progressively shorter service life under congested cyclic loading. New developments in bio- concrete are especially promising, particularly self-healing concrete derived through bacteria. During micro-crack accumulation, or any variation of cracking, bacterial concrete can repair or remediate these micro-cracks, and bio-concrete can promote a longer service life. This research looked at the combined effects of a self-healing concrete based on Bacillus subtilis and 3S Recron Fibers which are capable of improving the tensile strength and ductility of concrete, on the durability and fatigue behaviour of rigid pavements. A thorough review of literature available shows that the microbial activities found in bacterial concrete can autonomously heal micro-cracks through the precipitation of calcium carbonate which leads to increased impermeability and mechanical performance over time. Recron fibers were reported to control shrinkage cracks, improve post cracking behaviour, and reduce cyclic stress concentrations. Both bio-concrete and Recron fibers can produce a bio-fiber-reinforced concrete matrix providing excellent fatigue resistance, micro-crack mitigation and ultimately better long-term durability than conventional mixes. The incorporation of these technologies in rigid pavement design indicates a promising change towards sustainable and resilient infrastructure. This paper reviews key findings from recent experimental and analytical work and highlights research needs while discussing the potential of using bacteria-induced concrete with Recron 3S fibers as an innovative solution to enhance the service life of rigid pavement subjected to large traffic loads.
