Arctic Sea Ice Meltdown Enhances the South Asian Summer Monsoon Rainfall

Arctic sea ice exhibits seasonal variations that substantially influence large-scale atmospheric dynamics and global weather patterns. In recent decades, its extent has declined rapidly, especially in spring and summer, potentially affecting the equator-to-pole temperature gradient, energy transport, and tropical climate. Using observed and reanalysis data, we demonstrate a strong inverse correlation between Arctic sea ice extent and Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall on interannual timescales, with June to July Arctic sea ice variability exerting the most pronounced influence on late phase of monsoon rainfall (i.e., August to September). Composite and linear trend analyses (1979–2022) link declining Arctic sea ice with increased rainfall over western and northwestern India, indicating a westward shift in the monsoon zone. Sea ice decline triggers stationary Rossby wave train near the jet stream, with eastward propagation of wave energy that strengthens the north–south temperature gradient over the South Asian monsoon region. To further elucidate the underlying mechanism, we have carried out coupled climate model experiments. The model results replicate key aspects of the observed rainfall response, including the westward shift and enhanced rainfall over northwest India during August to September. These findings indicate that the long-term decline in Arctic sea ice can drive systematic changes in the South Asian monsoon through upper-level dynamical pathways. As Arctic sea ice continues to decline, it may contribute to a stronger and westward-expanding South Asian summer monsoon.
