Prosperity as health: Why we need an economy of care for a liveable future
Climate breakdown can be understood as a profound abdication of care: a collective failure to maintain and protect the conditions of life.Addressing that failure will take more than clever technology and incremental policy reform. It must start by reimagining the purpose of the economy and the direction of societal progress. For the past eight decades, progress has been measured by one dominant metric: growth in the gross domestic product (GDP)-a statistical account of the size of the economy.More is always better in this view. But relentless expansion is having profound ecological repercussions-not least on the climate. So if we're to protect the interests of future generations, we're going to have to rethink that formula. In other words, we must confront the distorted logic of economic growth.
