Relationship between atherogenic index of plasma and coronary artery disease severity in patients with acute coronary syndrome

Background Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) indicates the genuine correlation between atherogenic and protective lipoproteins and is linked to the dimensions of pre- and antiatherogenic lipoprotein particles. Aim To evaluate the association between AIP and coronary artery disease (CAD) severity among individuals with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Patients and methods This current work was conducted on 100 patients aged 42 to 79 years old, both sexes, with ACS. We did coronary angiography for each patient, and we calculated the Gensini score to determine CAD severity. The participants were allocated into two groups depending on their Gensini score group I ( n =18): mild/moderate (CAD) group and group II ( n =82): severe (CAD) group. All patients were subjected to electrocardiogram, trans-thoracic echocardiography, and coronary angiography. Results A significant positive association existed between Gensini score and AIP ( P <0.001). Diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension, smoking, and AIP were substantially higher in group II contrasted to group I ( P <0.05). DM, smoking, and AIP had been independent predictors of severe CAD affected by Gensini score. Killip classification, serum creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, cholesterol, high, low-density lipoprotein, troponin, and international normalized ratio were insignificantly different between both groups. Conclusions The study demonstrated a significant correlation between the AIP and the severity of CAD among individuals with ACS, as determined by the Gensini score. AIP was significantly greater among individuals with severe CAD compared with those with mild or moderate disease. Additionally, the study identified DM and smoking as independent predictors of severe CAD.

Abstract

Background Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) indicates the genuine correlation between atherogenic and protective lipoproteins and is linked to the dimensions of pre- and antiatherogenic lipoprotein particles. Aim To evaluate the association between AIP and coronary artery disease (CAD) severity among individuals with acute coronary syndrome (ACS).
