Pharmacognostic and Pharmacological Profile of Albizia amara roxb and Achyranthes aspera linn
AbstractAlbizia amara and Achyranthes aspera are widely recognized in traditional medicine for their therapeutic properties. Albizia amara, belonging to the Fabaceae family, exhibits anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and hepatoprotective activities, whereas Achyranthes aspera, a member of Amaranthaceae, is reported for its diuretic, antidiabetic, wound-healing, andimmunomodulatory effects. This chapter provides a comprehensive pharmacognostic andpharmacological analysis of these two medicinal plants, integrating modern scientific approachesand novel findings. Detailed botanical descriptions, including macro- and microscopiccharacteristics, physicochemical parameters, and powder microscopy, establish reliableidentification criteria. Phytochemical profiling reveals a rich diversity of bioactive secondarymetabolites such as flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, triterpenoids, and phenolic acids, which arecorrelated with their pharmacological activities. Advanced extraction and chromatographictechniques and standardization of major bioactive constituents.Pharmacological studies underscore the therapeutic potential of both species. Albizia amarademonstrates significant antioxidant activity through free radical scavenging and lipidperoxidation inhibition, alongside anti-inflammatory effects mediated via COX and NF-κBpathway modulation. Its antimicrobial efficacy spans Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and it exhibits hepatoprotective effects in preclinical models of chemically induced liver damage.Achyranthes aspera shows hypoglycemic activity through modulation of insulin secretion andglucose uptake, wound-healing potential via collagen synthesis enhancement, andimmunomodulatory effects by regulating cytokine expression. Mechanistic insights highlightmolecular targets, signaling pathways, and structure–activity relationships that underpin thesepharmacological outcomes. Toxicological evaluations confirm their relative safety at therapeuticdoses, though further chronic and clinical investigations are warranted. The chapter also emphasizes ethnobotanical significance, tracing traditional uses acrossAyurveda, Siddha, and folk medicine systems, and compares them with modern pharmacological evidence. Novel perspectives include exploration of synergistic effects with other herbalconstituents, potential for nanoformulation-based delivery, and implications for drugdevelopment and nutraceutical applications. Research gaps are identified in clinical translation, standardization, bioavailability enhancement, and sustainable sourcing. By integratingpharmacognostic validation with contemporary pharmacological studies, this work provides arobust scientific foundation for future research and therapeutic development of Albizia amaraand Achyranthes aspera.
