The Effect Of Locally Delivered Ciprofloxacin-Loaded Injectable Platelet-Rich Fibrin As An Adjunct To Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy On The Gingival Crevicular Level Of Interleukin 6: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Study
Background: Injectable platelet-rich fibrin (iPRF) is frequently utilized, either alone or in conjunction with biomaterials, to promote the healing of soft and hard tissues. This randomized trial assessed the effect of ciprofloxacin (Cip)-augmented injectable platelet-rich fibrin (iPRF) as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy. Methods: Sixty patients with periodontal disease participated in the study. Patients were randomly assigned to three treatment arms (n=20/group): SRP only (Group I), SRP + iPRF (Group II), or SRP + Cip-loaded iPRF (Group III). Periodontal parameters, including probing depth [PD], clinical attachment level [CAL], gingival index [GI], plaque index [PI], and level of Interleukin-6 in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF), were recorded at baseline and 3 months of follow-up.Results: PI did not differ significantly between the groups over time, whereas GI demonstrated a statistically significantly decreased in the test groups. PD and CAL showed greater improvement in cip-loaded iPRF group than in the other groups. IL-6 levels were significantly improved in the Cip-loaded iPRF group at 1 month but showed no statistically significant difference at 3 months compared to those in the iPRF group. Conclusion: Cip-loaded i-PRF demonstrated superior outcomes compared to i-PRF alone in terms of periodontal clinical parameters, with decreased IL-6 concentration levels within the GCF.Key word: periodontitis, nonsurgical, IPRF, ciprofloxacin loaded PRF, IL-6
