Mechanism and path search method for Voltage-Dominated cascading failures in Power-Electronized power systems

• To address the new phenomena of cascading failures, the evolutionary characteristics and mechanisms of VCF are analyzed. • The action state domain of VREs is characterized, and a correlation model for VREs is established. • A method for predicting VRE correlations based on random walks in multilayer coupled network is pro-posed. • A path search method for voltage-dominated cascading failures is proposed. The strong coupling and controllable characteristics of power electronic equipment lead to the emergence of novel voltage-dominated cascading failures in power systems. Due to fundamental differences in the mechanisms and manifestations, existing analysis methods designed for cascading failures are poorly suited for voltage-dominated cascading failures. Therefore, the concepts of voltage response events (VREs) are defined based on the new characteristics of cascading failures in power-electronic-dominated power systems. The action state domain for VREs is established, and the sequential response process of VREs is analyzed. Then, a correlation model for VREs is built. A multilayer coupled network of VREs and the grid is constructed, and a method for predicting VRE correlations based on random walks in the multilayer coupled network is proposed. A path search method for voltage-dominated cascading failures is proposed. Finally, the accuracy of the proposed method is validated through simulations on the IEEE 39-bus power system.
