Nurses’ Knowledge and Practice regarding Care of Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis
Background: Hemodialysis (HD) is a life-sustaining treatment for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), where blood is filtered through a machine to remove toxins and excess fluids. Nurses play a vital role in ensuring patient safety, comfort, and treatment efficacy. Aim: To assess nurses’ knowledge and practice regarding care of patients undergoing hemodialysis. Design: A descriptive exploratory research design was utilized. Setting: The study was conducted at the dialysis unit in El Mounira Hospital. Subjects: A convenient sample of 60 nurses working in El Mounira Hospital with at least one year of experience. Tools: Two tools were used: (1) Nurses’ Knowledge Assessment Questionnaire and (2) Observational Checklist regarding care of patients undergoing hemodialysis. Results: About three quarters of the studied nurses had a satisfactory level of knowledge regarding hemodialysis care, and most of them were competent in patients care. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between total knowledge and practice scores. Conclusion: The study revealed that three quarters of the nurses demonstrated satisfactory knowledge, while most of the studied nurses were competent practices in caring for patients undergoing hemodialysis. A significant positive correlation existed between nurses’ knowledge and their practice. Recommendations: Regular training programs, updated care protocols, and continuous evaluation are essential to enhance nurses’ knowledge and practice in hemodialysis care.
